Ethics

The philosophical study of moral values, principles, and the foundations of right action.

The philosophical study of moral values, principles, and the foundations of right action.

Applied ethics must navigate the gap between theoretical frameworks and the complexity of actual decisions — where frameworks conflict, interests are entangled, and consequences are uncertain.

The Sufi tradition distinguishes between exoteric ethics (akhlaq al-zahir) — conduct — and the deeper cultivation of character (akhlaq al-batin). This integration of virtue, law, and inner transformation produces an ethical framework that is simultaneously rigorous and alive, avoiding both antinomianism and legalism.
